Welcome to Bay Shore Physics!

Bay Shore currently offers four different physics courses (AP Physics B, AP Physics B+300, honors (300) physics, and Regents (200) physics) in addition to several physics oriented electives (Principles of Engineering, Student Research, and the MST program).

Typically, students that have successfully completed Regents level chemistry in their junior year will continue with the Regents level physics course in their senior year. This course follows the curriculum outlined by New York State Department of Regents and culminates in the New York State Physics Regents in June.

Students that have successfully completed honors chemistry in their sophomore year have an option into which physics class they chose to enter. The standard route is to take honors physics their junior year. Honors physics is an accelerated physics course that incorporates several SAT II level topics in addition to the Regents curriculum. Students will be prepared for the SAT II - physics exam and the Physics Regents exam.

Students that performed exceptionally well in their previous science and math courses now have the option to take AP Physics B+300 as a junior. AP Physics is an algebra and trigonometry based college level physics course that culminates with the AP exam in May. The course is designed for students interested in Pre-medical, natural or biological sciences. Students enrolled in this course are self motivated, hard working students at the top of their class. These students are not only expected to complete the AP Physics B exam in May but also the New York State Physics Regents exam in June. Upon completion of this course, students would then have the option to enroll in either AP Chemistry, AP Biology, AP Environmental Science or AP Physics C - Mechanics in their senior year.

Seniors that have completed honors physics in their junior year can also enroll in AP Physics B. This course is slightly different than the one described above in that the students are seeing much of the material for a second time. AP Physics does cover a greater number of topics and to a greater depth than honors physics; however, students are expected to have a good understanding of general topics and principles.

Starting in the 2006-2007 school year, Bay Shore will be offering AP Physics C (mechanics only) to students who have successfully completed either honors physics or AP Physics B+300 as a junior. AP Physics C is a calculus based college level physics course designed for students interested in continuing their educational studies in either physics or engineering. The course will culminate with the AP Physics C exam in May.
