Purpose
The purpose of this experiment is to hopefully find out the answers to some of the following questions:
In a rain storm is the number of cosmic rays affected by the presense of lightning?
Do cosmic rays influence lightning production?
Do cosmic rays have different affects on different types of lightning (intracloud, cloud to ground, ground to cloud)?
Are there different types of cosmic rays, and if so, what are they?
Where do the cosmic rays come from?
Materials
The materials needed to conduct this experiment include the following:
1 bucket (the bigger the size the better) Fig. 1
1 funnel
1 plastic bag (a strong bag is prefered)
4 magnets (at least)
10 slides (this should allow you to get a good amount of data)
Set-up
In order to obtain the data needed for figuring out the questions from the purpose, you need to construct a rain collecter. The materials above are the items needed, and you put them together like this.
Step 1: Cut the plastic bag until there is only one layer.
Step 2: Cut a hole about 6 inches in the center of the bag that is now draped over the opening of the bucket.
Step 3: Place the funnel in the center of the bag where the hole is and tape it down so that the water will not get through with out going through the filter.
Step 4: Then take the magnents and wrap them in ceran wrap and tape them to the inside of the funnel. When the set-up is done, it should look like Fig. 2 and 3.
Step 5: After a good rain storm, (in which the date, time, amount of water collected, and if there was lightning, were written down for documentation), take the ceran wrap and put it on a slide to view under a microscope.
Preliminary Results
It is very hard to determine the difference between a micro meterorite and other samples, such as pollen and dust, because there are no pictures with definent qualities saying, "this is what a micro meterorite looks like." Hopefully, we will be able to find a source or find out a characteristic that will help us determine the difference between pollen adn micro
meterorites.
