The Cushcraft Log Periodic Antenna
We have used Cushcraft Log Periodic Dipole Antennas (LPDA) as the one installed at the Suffolk County Community College. They are relatively inexpensive antenna and covers a frequency range of 50 to 500 MHz. This antenna is a do it yourself, meaning it has a ton of parts. It does have a waveguide in the middle and terminated with a balun in front and ready for a 50 Ohm cable. This antenna has been discontinued by the manufacturer and not in their catalog anymore. We found out that some elements break off after about 8 months of use. We speculate that the reason for that could be bird weight causing stress where antenna elements are bolted to the main waveguide. The most likely case of element breaking off is caused by the use of dissimilar metals, i.e. use of Stainless Steel bolts and aluminum rods.
