PHY579:Lesson1

From MariachiWiki

Tell us who you are

This is your first lesson on wiki. We will be using wikis to upload information about our projects. So here's the first lesson, step by step....

Step1 is login. Go to the upper right corner and login. From now on, you can edit any page in this wiki.

  1. Go to this page. Special:Listusers
  2. Find your user name. It should be in RED - this means there is nothing written about this subject. When links are in red, it means the article is empty.
  3. Click on your user name, this will bring a page that says, Editing Username
  4. Take a minute to recognize the different buttons. Above the area you will be editing there are 11 buttons. They are for different functions and you can move the mouse over them to identify. Clicking on them will input the correct syntax in your text.
  5. Below the edit box, there are three buttons Save Page, Show Preview and Show Changes. I guess they are sort of intuitive...
  6. Now type a text and use Show Preview on how you're doing. When happy, save page.

The entry is sort of dry, because there are only words... You can do better, and put an image of yourself. To accomplish this look on the left hand side. There is a toolbox, and click on upload file, and follow instructions.

Remember the name of the file you uploaded. It is easier to remember files such as takai.jpg or helio1,jpg as opposed to PN250083322.jpg, but it is your choice.

Caution - do not upload very large images. On a typical web site the resolution is not that great. Even a picture that is 640x480 will do. So reduce the size of your image before uploading. Also for most purposes an average quality picture will do as it not often that you see people with ultra high resolution displays. So take this into consideration when uploading pictures.

Now it is time to insert the picture into your page.

  1. Insert this [[Image:yourfile.jpg|300px|left]] before your text. This puts the image on the left hand side of your text and resizes it to 300px in the horizontal, and proportionally on the vertical direction.
  2. If you want the picture on the right hand side, use right, instead of left. center also works.
  3. borders and caption can be added if you use this construct: [[Image:yourfile.jpg|thumb|300px|left|Figure Caption]]
  4. If the picture doesn't show up, you forgot the name of the file you uploaded. Don't panic Click Here and find out.

Remember save your work once in a while. Wiki pages are reversible and can be edited. You can also edit this page if you think it is not accurate. Other places you can get help are

  1. InfoKiosk and look in Howtos
  2. MediaWiki Help

Look here for few examples

  1. Bill Leacock's page
  2. Rich Gearns's page
  3. Adam Plana's page
  4. Ken Tiu's page
  5. Liz's page
  6. Michael Marx's page

You can always look how a page is composed, by clicking on the edit tab! The 'Etiquette is to edit other people's page only if you find problems with english (like I usually do). Adding wrong information is probably not a good idea.
