Miriam Forman is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Stony Brook. My somewhat novel career and current status are described in the front-page article in the Spring 2004 "Gazette" of the Committee on the Status of Women in Physics.

My current research is in the physics and observation of structure in the magnetic turbulence in the solar wind, and how cosmic rays and other energetic particles diffuse through it. I also collaborate on extracting physics from certain data from spacecraft, with people at University of New Hampshire Space Science Center, and at Imperial College London. Since the Voyager 1 spacecraft broke through the termination shock of the solar wind in December 2004, and may in another couple of years get into the real interstellar medium, this is a very interesting time for understanding how stellar winds and the shock waves in them affect cosmic rays.

I hope the WISE workshops on cosmic rays will be fun for us all, and that you come to appreciate cosmic rays as a message from our sun and our galaxy, and a fact of life and tool for environmental studies on Earth.
