Here you can find a little about me and my blog on the Summer 2007 Cosmic Rays Workshop.
Name: Kimberly Bogler |

Hi, my name is Kimberly :-)

[edit] Day 1: Monday June 25th 2007Today was basically just an introduction to everything. There was a whole lot of lectures, which were helpful and we were divided into groups. My group is headed by Mr. T's dad- Mr.T, we have meteors. I was a little confused at first (and still am a little) how they are conected to cosmic rays, but a person named Josh explained to us how meteors cause ionized trails that interfere with detecting cosmic rays. Therefore, we have to determine a way to tell them apart (i think). So far all we have to do is put up a site (which I am not exactly sure how to do) with definitions of meteors...etc. I am looking foward to tomorrow and hopefully we can get some ideas down.
[edit] Day2: Tuesday June 26th 2007Today we did a few different group work activities. In the first group we learned how to use WinRadio and MATLAB which dealt with matrices (and I actually understood it a little after all the explanations). The second group I worked alone because no one wanted to work with me aparently. But it was ok because Mr. T, Dima and another physics teacher helped me determine at which voltage the scintilators work best. I am looking foward to learning about the video conferencing, if time allows. Tomorrow is the ribon cutting ceremony for the lab that does not exist yet, so that should interesting (I wonder if we will be wearing sombreros). [edit] Day 3: Wednesday June 27th 2007First, we had the opportunity to work with some different people who showed us a few interesting things. The first group I went to dealt with carbon 14 dating. After a short lecture about how when cosmic rays enter the atmosphere they collide with the neutrons of a nitrogen-14 nucleus and then the carbon-14 combines with oxygen to form carbon dioxide...etc we finally had the chance to opperate a fake accelerator. After that I observed the Cloud Chamber which showed ionized particles moving which was kind of cool. [edit] Day 4: June 28 2007I really enjoyed Mike Inglis' presentation today on black holes, it was very interesting. A lot of the material he talked about was very familiar because I had read a book that dealt with black holes- I forget the name, it was some time in Middle School. After his presentation we went outside to observe the sun through a telescope that had filters on it so that we would not go blind. On the first one we saw the dark spot on the lower right and on the second one which I forget the name- we were supposed to see flame, but unfortunately I missed it. I think I will dig out the telescope that my brother used to have and start to look at the stars at night when I can't sleep. [edit] Day 5 June 29 2007Today was the last day of the workshop. I hope that this week will help me throughout the year since there are scintilators hooked up in my school. In addition to learning about cosmic rays, I also learned about Stony Brook University as a whole a little bit and had a chance to walk around. I think I will most certainly apply there in the fall-either to the Honors College or to WISE. I am leaning more towards the Honors College because in my opinion it is better to work with a variety of people. Despite the fact of me being the only person to make a poster...I still did not win (even though my poster was very pretty). It was a little sad because I had worked really hard on it for about two weeks. :-( But that has not stopped me from loving physics, I am looking foward to AP Physics C next year! |
