Karyn Waszmer is currently an Honors Physics and Astronomy Teacher at Northport High School. Also a graduate student at Stony Brook University; she is pursuing an MALS with a cluster in Educational Technology.
Karyn's interest in Astronomy was encouraged at a young age by her father, who used to take her on the roof of their house to watch meteor showers. By sixth grade her interest was expanded by two of her science teachers ( Mr. Demas & Mr. Obnabeny) and the fully functioning planetarium at her school. Her passion in the field continued through out the years, and inspired her to start the Astronomy program at the school in which she now teaches.
Karyn started her journey in physics as an undergraduate physics major at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania. At Gettysburg she also participated on the Women's basketball team. She ultimately graduated from St. John's University (Queens, NY) in May of 2004 with a bachelor's degree in physics and secondary education. The following September, she began her career as a teacher at Northport.
Outside of school Karyn prefers to spend her time staying active. Her favorite activities include playing basketball, running, snowboarding, and traveling. Though time for relaxing is rare; during those times she prefers watching LOST, reading, stargazing, and unwinding on the beach.
Karyn became involved with the MARIACHI program in June of '07 when a research teacher at her school suggested she would probably enjoy doing research on cosmic rays. In the spring semester of '08 she enrolled in PHY315 in order to enhance her ability to research cosmic rays. She is eager to continue research and learn more about the mysterious and elegant universe.
