Workshops and Courses

by the MARIACHIs

The MARIACHI experiment runs workshops for detector construction, detector use, and the use of the existing cyberinfrastructure.

Current and upcoming workshops

  • Summer Student/Teacher Workshop (SB Nuclear Structure Laboratory) The MARIACHI summer workshop is designed for physics and research teachers, as well as high school students interested in pursuing research projects. The workshop will be a combination of training, brainstorming, and hands-on sessions.
  • Summer Research (Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Laboratory) Students and Teachers will help develop MARIACHI ground array detectors, radar detectors, data acquisition, and simulations of radar signals.
  • QuarkNet is offered in the summer time. Dates vary from year to year.

Current and upcoming courses

Special Topics for Physics Teachers is offered nearly every semester to physics teachers who want to learn and develop hands-on experiments in modern physics.

  • CEB558/PHY315 is a relatively new course based on MARIACHI technology which was offered to teachers, graduate students, and undergraduates for the first time in Fall 2007. It is called Hands-on Science with Cosmic Rays: An Introduction to Experimental Research and builds on the successful WISE mini-courses.

LIGASE

  • Our partner, LIGASE, Long Island Group Advancing Science Education, offers workshops for elementary, middle, and high school teachers
    • LIGASE runs Workshops for K-12 Teachers in teaching, pedagogy and computer skills.
    • LIGASE also runs programs for undergraduate, high school and middle school students during the school year and in summer camps. We have a goal of a Physics and Cyberinfrastucture Teaching Center that will implement the lessons currently being developed in our WSE 187 course to make them available to a broader audience.
    • LIGASE runs various programs for prospective teachers.
